JOBS TO DO IN JANUARY

  • There is still time to plant fruit; specialist nurseries have a much wider selection than garden centres.

  • Start off early potatoes by laying tubers (or egg box) to 'chit' in a cool, light but frost free place.

  • Make sure vulnerable plants are protected with dry mulches over their roots. For additional protection, wrap plants in fleece in the coldest spells.

  • Complete winter digging of new vegetable plots. Empty beds of the debris of old crops as the weather permits.

  • Plant dwarf bulbous plants such as winter aconits, snowdros and dwarf iris under winter-flowering witch hazel, mahonia and tree heather to extend their season of interest into spring.

  • Sow broad beans, lettuce, radishes, salad onions and spinach under cover.
